Flange System for 2013-4 for Courses Pre-Calculus and Calculus

TESTING: The chapter tests (2 to 4 per quarter) comprise 80% of the quarter grade. Formula sheets will be occasionally provided by the teacher as specified on the website for some chapters. Students may bring their own formula sheet to the exams following posted guidelines.

HOMEWORK & QUIZZES: These comprise 20% of the quarter grade. WebAssign HOMEWORK is set up so that you can practice all the key skills in the topic. You get feedback on the problems and multiple attempts to get them right. The homework is due on the day of the quiz or test, but students should spread out there attempts at the various assignments throughout the chapter. Students can get automatic extensions on the homework through WebAssign with a minor penalty. WebAssign QUIZZES are just longer homework assignments designed for review of a greater range of topics. There will be one or two of these each quarter.

EXTRA CREDIT POINTS (PIPS): Pips are added to the numerator and denominator of the quarter grade. For example, a student with 300 of 400 points for a quarter has 75%. If they earn 50 pips in a quarter, they now have 350 out of 450 for a quarter grade of 78%. Pips can be earned in the following ways:

  1. TEST CORRECTIONS: Students who turn in thorough test corrections by the end of the quarter can earn a number of pips = number of points missed on the test. Fewer pips will be awarded for incomplete corrections.
  2. NOTES: Students who turn in the notes for a chapter can earn up to 10 pips per chapter for complete notes submitted on the day of the test. Fewer pips will be awarded for incomplete notes. A blank copy of the notes can be printed up from the course website and filled in during class. A student may also use their own paper and show all examples worked out. Label all notes with your name, group and section of the text. Notes CANNOT be used for tests.
  3. IN CLASS EXAMPLES: Students can earn 1 to 3 pips for each problem they submit at the board or SmartBoard. The emphasis is on presenting the solution, not just the answer, so that other students can learn from a variety of approaches to the problem.
  4. If T = # of tests in a quarter, then 125T = total points in a quarter (100 for each test and 25 for HW&Q per chapter) and total pips for a quarter are limited to 50T.

SECOND SEMESTER

STUDENTS

I hope you had a joyous and restful respite.

Welcome to the Second Semester.

We will be starting off with a special unit called the Pi Chapter

in all 5 sections.

The Pi Chapter will be Probability and MyFunction Project in PreCalc and Psychic Derivatives in Calculus.

These units are not in the texts, but have many implications in terms of preparing you for Statistics and getting a deeper understanding of Calculus.
